Activity of matrix metalloproteinases (mmp-2 and mmp-9) in colorectal cancer patients

The role of Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the process of cell proliferation, invasion and metastasis of cancer cells has been reported in some works in the world. In particular, the MMP-2 and MMP-9 which are gelatinases  are shown to be in correlation with tumor progression and metastasis in colorectal cancer patient. However, up to now, there is not any work of detecting gelatinase activity in cancer patients of Vietnam. In this research, the activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was detected in the tumor and adjacent tissues of colorectal cancer patients by gelatin zymography and gel image analysis using ImageJ program. In the result, the activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in 68 patients with colorectal cancer increased significantly in tumor tissues in comparison with adjacent tissues (P<0.01).  A correlation between the increased activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 and a progression of tumor in a group of patients with colorectal cancer in Vietnam was found. The activity of ProMMP-2 and MMP-2 in tumor tissues increased significantly in patients with lymph node metastasis and TNM stage compared with those without (P<0.05). Our result indicated the role of MMP-2 in tumor progression and metastasis and may possibly be useful in detecting the presence of colorectal cancer.
