A comparison of invasive capabilities between Edwardsiella ictaluri and Aeromonas hydrophila on Pangasius hypophthalmus

Abstract


Bacillus Necrosis Pangasius (BNP) and motile aeromonas septicaemia (MAS) are two diseases which are caused by Edwardsiella ictaluri and Aeromonas hydrophila in striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), respectively. Mortality rate could be up to 80% once these disease outbreaks occurred. The innate invasive capabilities of these two bacteria in catsfish fingerlings were determined by intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) and immersion. Although wild type E. ictaluri and ∆wzz mutant showed different levels of virulence, they revealed the same invasive capabilities. Whereas, wild type A. hydrophila and ∆aroA mutant which showed different levels of virulence exhibited extremely weaker invasive capabilities of immersion in comparison to intraperitoneal injection.
