Accumulation of copper (Cu) and its effect on the activities of Glutatione-s-transferase and Catalase in Cyrinus carpio and Labeo rohita

Waterborne copper (Cu) uptake and accumulation in flesh and its effects on the activities of glutathione-s-transferase and catalase in Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Major carp (Labeo rohita) were evaluated. At Research Institute for Aquaculture No.1 (Bac Ninh, Viet Nam), four groups of fish (1 control and 3 experimental, 40 to 45 inviduals each) were maintained in 100-liter glass water tanks. Each group was exposed to a different sub-lethal dose of waterborne Cu, being 0.0 mg/l (control), 0.02 mg/l, 0.05 mg/l and 0.20 mg/l, for 60 days. Cu concentrations in flesh tissues increased with exposure time, with statistical significance at 45 to 60 days after exposure (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01) for experimental groups, whereas no statistically significant increases were observed for the control group (p > 0.05). For both species, Cu concentrations in flesh tissues varied inversely as the metal level in the aquatic environment. Cu accumulation in flesh tissue increased GST activity in both species. CAT activity in liver of experimental groups were statistically different (p < 0.05) from that of the control group after 45 to 60 days of exposure at the Cu level of 0.20 mg/l.
